Each July, Living History Sites cannot wait to explore all of the wonderful events (including historical sites) going on during Kingsport's Fun Fest celebration.

Roaring through a 2 week period, Fun Fest brings all of Kingsport and upper east Tennessee together for Fun Fest. A combination of activities, geared for every age, makes life fun for everyone in town!

Our favorite events at LivingHistorySites.com are the historical venues open and free to the public the first weekend of FunFest. Saturday afternoon you can visit the historic Netherland Inn and Hammond House near the Holston River. Sunday after church, you can head over to the "White House of Kingsport" the Allandale Mansion Open House Tour and then spend the rest of the afternoon at Hamlet Dobson Farm Fest at the Exchange Place living history farm, watching period activities, tons of fun games and crafts for the kids, while munching on corn, watermelon and kettle corn!

Fun Fest is famous for the Hot Air Balloon activities, sponsored by Holston Valley Medical Center. Friday night, watch the Hot Air Balloon Glow, as the balloons light up the night sky in front of the Civic Auditorium at 1550 Fort Henry Drive near downtown Kingsport! The next morning, bright and early on Saturday, the balloons will take off from 6:30am to 7:30am. They will launch a second time Saturday evening, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on July 24, 2010.

Interesting facts about hot-air ballooning (thanks Kingsport Archives)

*Hot-air ballooning is the oldest form of successfully engineered human flight.

*Hot air balloons were discovered in France in 1783 by brothers  Joesph and Jacques Montgolfier.

* The first balloons were sent up without any passengers and later various animals were used.

*On November 21, 1783, the first balloon carrying people, Pilatre de Rozier and Francois Laurnet,  was launched in Paris. The balloon rose about 500 feet and traveled for over 5 miles. Not bad for the first attempt!

Try walking a 3k or running in the Crazy 8's, a night race billed as the World's Fastest 8k! Golf, football, softball, soccer, and other sports clinics help the atheletes.
