MainStay Suites Airport ~ Roanoke VA

Where would you stay if you were moving cross country, had 18 target locations, and wanted to be plopped down in the middle of the historic mountains of Virginia? MainStay Suites Airport in Roanoke VA is your place. This Living History Sites review will be different from our normal review, since we actually lived at MainStay Suites for almost 6 weeks! However, it is such a great place, we absolutely HAVE to recommend it to you!

We pulled in, exhausted after a cross country drive from California, and were immediately at home. The lobby has an inviting fireplace, and large comfortable wing back chairs, a taste of home for any traveler. Stroll down to the adjoining lounge area for comfortable couches, window seats surrounded by books, along with chess sets and games. Quiet, pleasantly decorated, this area is also the breakfast room and where they hold evening receptions once a week.

We were absolutely THRILLED with our one bedroom suite! It was larger than my apartment at the beach and much nicer! You walk in to a kitchen, beautifully appointed with granite counter tops, a stove and microwave, and pots and pans for 4 people. After being on the road for a week, it was a delight to have the ability to cook again, and serve my family food! There was a nice little living room, that fit our family easily with a cozy love seat and chair. The master bedroom was huge, with a comfortable king sized bed, a real closet with mirrors in the dressing area, where the sink was. The bathroom was exceptionally clean, with decent towels and plenty of extra linens. All in all, it was like a small, comfortably appointed, luxury condo (more comfortable and homey than luxurious - but some nice touches nonetheless)

The entire hotel sparkles, it is so clean and comfortable! There is truly a difference staying in a long term hotel, the staff knows you will be there for awhile, and they really work hard to provide a home away from home atmosphere.

It is very quiet too, very orderly. We were easily able to homeschool while we were there, without interruption or noise. This was incredibly important!

This hotel also welcomed the family dog, ClaraBaughn, the world's most patient cocker spaniel. We did pay a little extra for a pet deposit as they thoroughly clean those rooms afterwards.

While waiting for escrow to close, we were at MainStay Suites the entire month of December, even spending Christmas there. With our stuff in storage, we were in transition, away from home and it was a difficult year. The folks at MainStay did all they could to make us feel at home away from home. Mrs. Shirley and husband Harry brought us a small Christmas tree from home to put our presents under. They surprised us with homemade cookies one day! When Emily cut old fashioned snowflakes out of white paper, they asked if she could decorate the lobby windows and make snowflakes for their employee party.

Hotel employees had great recommendations for things to do in the area. Be sure and try this restaurant, Christmas dinner would be good here, and don't miss downtown Roanoke or the gorgeous Roanoke Hotel! We appreciated their suggestions.

We stayed at MainStay Roanoke, zipping up and down Interstate 81, checking out our different target areas. "America's Favorite Drive," the Blue Ridge Parkway is a can't miss and you can try The Peaks of Otter lodge and restaurant north of Roanoke, VA is open year round. The MainStay was so comfortable that we chose to commute to Lexington, Buena Vista, Staunton, Appomattox, and Lynchburg. We visited Lexington to see the historical sites, went to Monticello for a day trip and went all over Virginia soaking up history, from the comfort of our home away from home! We were happy as a clam there and no other hotel compared to it at all!

The price was phenomenal! Since we were staying long term, we worked out a great rate. When you mix comfort with a terrific rate, and the privacy of Mama and Daddy having their own room, while the kids slept in the living room, it was well worth it! Be advised to reserve in advance during Virginia Tech's football season, they are likely to be sold out completely as folks drive from Roanoke to Blacksburg.

Breakfast at MainStay is brought to you by the dearest, sweetest woman on the planet, Mrs. Shirley, and occasionally her husband Harry. They both have the true gift of hospitality, making guests feel like they are welcome, eager to serve. Bustling about her super clean kitchen, Shirley makes biscuits and sausage gravy and keeps a piping hot buffet! Depending on season and who is staying, Shirley rotates real bacon, eggs, sausage and more through the breakfast. As most buffets have, there are tons of cereal choices, fresh fruit, warm cinnamon apples in the winter, pastries, French toast, and more. Mrs. Shirley just got a new waffle maker, so you can look forward to hot Belgian waffles when you stay there!

Lisa's favorite thing about MainStay Suites in Roanoke was the delightful people there. We stayed there for about 6 weeks altogether, right after moving cross country and we felt cared about, pampered and just loved on by the staff. I enjoyed breakfast each morning, because there was such a variety and Mrs. Shirley really tried her best to please her guests. In the long term stay - I never did get sick of the same selection. Shirley's genius was in her variety of foods. We were there in the winter, so one day I would create an Egg McMuffin, the next French toast, hot apples and oatmeal, egg and sausage sandwich, boiled eggs and yogurt, bagel and cereal, and the choices went on and on. You could really make a lot with what was provided. And always, seeing the smile on Shirley and Harry and the rest of the staff - made it a great day!

Emily's favorite thing about MainStay in Roanoke was the friendliness and the fact that it felt like home! She loved being like Eloise, who lived at the Plaza Hotel in Paris. Living in a hotel, enjoying the 24 hour a day hot chocolate machine, and the yummy breakfasts! She especially loved the pancake wrapped sausages, because you know Mama would never buy those! This was a great place for kids.

We are profoundly grateful for MainStay Suites in Roanoke welcoming us to the eastern side of the United States. Tell them that Dave, Lisa and Emily sent you, the folks from Living History Sites sent you (although they call us "The Abingdon Folks."
